Giving Back this Holiday Season

The holiday season is full of opportunities to express how one feels about another, show respect and care for others. The Montessori curriculum uses this season to increase your child's awareness of those in their lives they are grateful for and those in their environment who have needs that are not being met. Even though every season of the year deserves attention for those in need of services or items, there are unique opportunities for your child to give back during the holiday season.

Giving Back this Holiday Season
The holiday season is often seen by parents as a time to show their young children the meaning of 'thinking about others.' They want their children to know there are others in the world who have needs for things in life their children take for granted.

As a parent, you have to choose activities that will have the effect you are looking to gain. An event such as helping in soup kitchens does not always give young children the right impression. In these kitchens, they often are in the way of the adults, and they may be witnessing a lot of standing around that does not benefit those they are there to help. There are many other ways for your child to participate in community services that are more aligned with their young age.

Choose a Charitable Organization
The holiday season has charities sending out requests in hopes of receiving more donations. If you begin collecting these requests around October and hold them until the first of December, you can allow your child to decide on how to help those in need. Select a dollar amount your budget can handle and sit down with your child to discuss each request and determine who should receive their money. The donation can be sent with a handwritten letter from your child expressing how they feel about the charity and why they chose to help them.

Giving back to those in need, especially during the holiday season makes your young child aware of others in the world. Selecting an organization to donate to will increase their knowledge of how many causes exist and as they grow, they'll begin looking at which ones provide the best benefits and support.  At Montessori Children's House, our students are like a family and learn to support one another through various means, including helping out during the holiday season.  To learn more about the Montessori difference, contact us today.
